Chiikawa's first film passes ¥18.1 billion, the year's biggest release in Japan
Twelve million people have seen it in 87 days. A seventh gift for moviegoers, drawn by creator Nagano, arrives on 24 October.

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island has taken more than ¥18.1 billion at the Japanese box office in the 87 days since its release on 24 July. More than 12.42 million people had seen it by 18 October.12
It is the highest-grossing film released in Japan this year, and Oricon reports that it is running ahead of the pace set by One Piece Film: Red.1
From a manga to a franchise
The animated film is the first big-screen outing for Nagano's characters and adapts a long story arc that fans call the “Siren arc”. Screenings in 4DX and sing-along “cheering” shows have helped keep audiences coming back.2
From 24 October, cinemas will hand out a seventh visitor gift: a clear card newly drawn by Nagano, in four random designs, while stocks last.2
