Edo-Tokyo Museum welcomes its millionth visitor, six months after reopening
It is the first time the museum has passed a million visitors in a year since 2006.

The Edo-Tokyo Museum in Sumida Ward welcomed the millionth visitor to its permanent galleries on 14 October, about six months after it reopened on 31 March following a long renovation. It is the first time annual visitor numbers have passed one million since 2006.12
The millionth guests were a family of three generations visiting from Kumamoto. They were greeted at a small ceremony by the museum's director, architectural historian Terunobu Fujimori.23
What changed
The museum opened in 1993 and closed for work in 2022. Its galleries now include a full-size model of the Hattori Clock Shop, the building that symbolised Ginza in the Meiji era, and the reconstruction of the Nakamura-za kabuki theatre has been rebuilt so that visitors can step inside.1
The director said the displays had been reorganised to tell the stories of Edo and Tokyo in a clearer, more three-dimensional way.3
