Hida's Furukawa Matsuri named a Japan Night View Heritage site
The spring festival, already on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, was one of 14 places chosen from 171 applications.

The Furukawa Matsuri in Hida, Gifu Prefecture, has been recognised as a Japan Night View Heritage site in the historical and cultural category. It was one of 14 places selected this year from 171 applications nationwide.1
The programme, run by the Night View Tourism Convention Bureau, recognises outstanding night scenery in four categories: nature, facilities, illuminations, and history and culture. Experts review the entries.1
Why the festival
Held every April in the old town of Hida-Furukawa, the festival is known for its night-time parade of the great drum and for lantern-lit floats. It is part of the UNESCO-listed group of Yama, Hoko and Yatai float festivals.
Hida City says it will use the recognition to promote the festival's evening scenery to visitors from Japan and abroad and to encourage more overnight stays.1
